3 tips for hitting the ground running in 2022

New Year’s resolutions are a funny thing. We come up with a whole bunch of things we want to accomplish by next year on December 31 and then expect to hit the ground running the next day. Perhaps that is why statistics tell us that 80% of New Year’s resolutions fail by February. With that in mind, the change of the year does allow us the opportunity to get a fresh start and strive for some new goals, both personally and professionally. To help make sure that you have the best chances for success with your business and financial goals in 2022, I have compiled a list of 3 tips that I have embraced to help me achieve my business goals.

1)      Make sure achieving the goal really matters to you

I can already hear you saying, “Of course it matters!!! Why would I set the goal if it didn’t matter!” and I hear you. Isn’t it also true that sometimes those “should do” goals make it onto our list instead? I should eat healthily, I should cut my business expenses, I should create a budget and stick to it, etc. These are all great goals, but if they don’t truly matter to you in a deep and meaningful way then you are already setting yourself up for failure at succeeding on them. Maybe cutting your business expenses by 10% isn’t sexy, and maybe it seems like a “should do” goal at first, but what if cutting those expenses by 10% means that you can generate the additional cash flow to fund the passion project you have been dreaming about? Or pay for that new piece of equipment you have been longing for? Or allow for you and your spouse to go on that 10th-anniversary trip you have always talked about? Presto Chango! You just made a “should do” into a “can’t wait to start” and drastically increased the likelihood you will succeed.

2)      Figure out the "how" in advance

Let’s say your business goal is to increase your profit by 5%. The types of activities that you would take on to do this by increasing your top line are quite different than those you would take on to cut expenses. In addition, wouldn’t it make sense to know or have an idea about what sales or cost-cutting methods work best now so that January can be about implementation rather than guess and test? Figuring out your"how" in advance means you can really hit the ground running in the new year and start seeing results faster.

3)      Block off the time now

Maybe this sounds a little extreme, but I live and die by my calendar. If it is not on the calendar it doesn’t happen.  In fact, I already have speaking engagements, firm training sessions, professional development, and other events booked into the spring of 2022. If you are not willing to block off and commit the time now what makes you think you will be willing to do it in-the-moment every day? Think about it - when is the last time you thought to yourself “WOW! I have all this extra time!!! I wonder what I should fill it with?!”... I am going to guess never.

I hope that these tips help you achieve great results in 2022. Please reach out to me about what you are shooting for next year. I love to hear what the business world is striving for, and I would love to help you develop the right measuring stick to track your progress.
